First food for my babies

Updated: Jan 3, 2021

Hello my loves,

A lot of parents especially first-time parents always wonder what solids to start with when their baby is ready.

This is a list of things I started with.

Please make sure your baby is between 4-6 months when you start solids.

Cereal- Nestum

I started both my babies with cereal at six months, I used Nestum because that is what I could afford. Cereal is easy to digest and does not require any chewing, so it is perfect

that small little tummy and is less likely to cause any allergies.

White porridge (Maize meal), also known as motogo

I grew up eating motogo, it was both filling and tastes amazing. Both my babies love it, and it is a great source of iron. The texture is also soft and makes it easy to digest, the fact that you can also choose how runny or thick you make it makes it even better. For a start, I did not add any butter or sugar for my babies at 6 months. I only added breastmilk because it has its natural sweetness. When it comes to motogo, babies always want more.

Apple, Butternut, Sweet potato, pear puree, and Green bean puree

You can never go wrong with these purees as a starter for your baby who is starting solids, my second baby's favorite is apple puree. Please note, I have grouped them all together but as a start, you may want to give baby one of each to avoid allergies. Start slowly and move from just one of each to mixing and also adding meat purees.

Mashed banana, mashed Avocado

My second born was not so wild about mashed avocado, however, my first loved it. Both my babies enjoyed banana, I have heard some mothers say banana can cause constipation, we never had that experience, if your baby gets constipated, give them pear puree instead. What I love about mashed banana and mashed avocado is that there is no cooking involved, you just peel, mix with breastmilk or formula, mash and feed, you don't even need a blender. And they are both very nutritious.

If you’re baby does not want solids but is taking their breastmilk or formula do not force them to eat, I messed up my first borns eating habits by force feeding him. I was worried about his weight and did not know any better. When babies are ready, they will eat solids, some babies even start at 12 months. Most of their nutrition comes from breastmilk or formula.

A lot of mom's ask me how I decide on portions, I follow the advice given by pediatricians at 4- 6 months, I give my babies 1-2 tablespoons of cereal or motogo once a day and 1-2 tablespoons of vegetable or fruit puree once a day. As they grow I increase the portions and feeding times balancing that out with giving them formula.

Please do not put food or cereal or any solids in a baby's milk bottle, it is chocking hazard. Feed solids with a spoon from a bowl.
